Agricultural Development Project in San Juan de la Maguana

The project area was the region of San Juan de la Maguana in the western Dominican Republic. The overall objective of the project was to improve agricultural productivity and incomes in the region, not only in relation to basic products but also to products for export. The project also worked to improve the living conditions of poor rural people and to promote conservation of natural resources.

The aims of the project were to:

  • improve irrigation infrastructure and carry out maintenance of existing hydraulic and irrigation works in the San Juan River basin, for more efficient use of the region’s water resources
  • support the development, diffusion and adoption by small-scale and medium-scale  farmers of improved production technologies, to help them increase their incomes
  • help rural communities preserve the region’s productive capacity and natural resource base, including forest resources such as the José del Carmen Ramírez national park
  • provide institutional support to the National Institute for Water Resources (INDRHI)  and the regional agricultural organization to help them develop their capacities for administration of irrigation, land use and marketing of agricultural products
