Environment Conservation and Poverty-Reduction Programme in Ningxia and Shanxi

The programme area includes 12 poor counties in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and in Shanxi province. At least 80 per cent of the households are poor, and 10 per cent are classified as very poor. The average annual income per capita is US$82. Because of the region’s severe climate, most households suffer from a seasonal food deficit. The programme’s objective is to enable rural people in the area to improve thier livelihoods and living conditions.

The programme works with partners and poor rural people to increase incomes, improve access to health and education facilities, and ensure food security during seasonal deficits. It promotes community participation in village development plans and supports literacy and training programmes, particularly for women.
