IFAD partners in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea

To meet D.P.R. Korea’s needs for food aid and humanitarian assistance, international donors such as the World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the European Union, international NGOs and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs have provided the country with direct aid and assistance. In D.P.R. Korea and other countries, IFAD collaborates closely with the WFP in providing:

  • post-crisis assistance
  • joint programming of development projects
  • more effective sharing of information

IFAD’s aim is to help the country’s poor rural people withstand the impact of crisis and improve their resilience to future crises through development-oriented initiatives. In D.P.R. Korea IFAD’s more important partner in post-crisis assistance operations is the WFP, which has experience in organizing Food-for-Work activities related to rural rehabilitation and reconstruction. IFAD finances activities that provide the resource base for longer-term recovery and sustainable economic development. Providing funds for agricultural input supply and setting up savings and credit organizations are two of the principal aspects of IFAD-financed activities.
