IFAD in Nicaragua IFAD has financed seven projects in Nicaragua since 1980, for a total of US$83.2 million. Four projects are closed. One has been ongoing since 2001 in the Departments of León, Chinandega and Managua. Another project is undertaking activities in the dry region of the country, where most poor people live. And the last one was approved on September 2007. IFAD strategy in Nicaragua Together with other donors, IFAD supports and co-finances the implementation of the Nicaraguan government’s Productive Rural Development Programme. It ensures that national rural development policies incorporate lessons learned from IFAD’s experience and knowledge of improving livelihood opportunities for rural poor people and reducing gender inequalities within the country. IFAD continues to focus development efforts on marginal and vulnerable regions where rural poor people still risk being excluded because of low investment in human capital and infrastructure.
