IFAD in Lao People's Democratic Republic

IFAD began operations in the Lao People's Democratic Republic in 1980. Since then it has provided a total of US$91.2 million in loans for eleven programmes and projects.

IFAD’s strategy in the Lao People's Democratic Republic

IFAD supports the Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in implementing the National Growth and Poverty Eradication Strategy (NGPES) and achieving the Millennium Development Goals. IFAD's strategy in the country has the objectives of promoting economic growth, sustainable livelihoods and food security among poor rural people, especially women, and particularly among vulnerable and marginalized groups in upland areas. In the mountainous regions, where IFAD has the most relevant experience, it can contribute directly to economic growth.

The organization applies a community-based development approach to strengthen the capacity of poor communities and their organizations to manage resources and services. Other priorities are:

  • introducing sustainable alternatives to shifting cultivation in the uplands and resolving associated land allocation issues
  • providing access to productive resources, improved technology and financial services
  • promoting market access and agricultural development led by the private sector
  • promoting gender-sensitive initiatives
  • building the capacity of institutions and contributing to policies to support rural development, particularly through the process of decentralization
